My off-the-field passion is 60 feet 6 Foundation. I started it to help fight leukemia and hopefully make an impact on kids in need. …I had no idea how it would change me. These kids have taught me how to live.

Named for the distance between the pitcher’s mound and home plate, the 60 feet 6 Foundation serves as a platform for Derek to lend his time, help grow awareness and offer direct financial support to charities dedicated to advancing the research and care for debilitating pediatric diseases, military veterans and their families, as well as organizations that focus on enhancing the well-being of the local community.

briggs quote

Briggs Berry’s courageous fight was an inspiration to Derek and the reason behind 60 Feet 6.

During the 2014 season, Derek Holland met 18-year-old Briggs Berry during one of his many meet and greets at Cook Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth. Berry was stricken with IgM syndrome, a rare immunodeficiency disorder that compromises an individual’s ability to fight off viruses, bacteria, or other pathogens .

Even though he was battling for his own life, true to his nature Berry never stopped thinking of others. In addition to spending time with patients, Berry planned and designed a teen life room in the hospital and worked as the patient ambassador to Children’s Miracle Network, among much else.
